The costs involved in using Giraffe are simple, transparent, upfront – and very reasonable. The main elements are:
Media Cost
The price of a print advert is a function of its size and the individual media’s
rate card cost. We have no control over the latter.
For example, the Cambridge Evening News (CEN) black and white rate card cost for recruitment is £26.95 per single column centimetre (the SCC rate).
So an advert that is 15 centimetres deep and 4 columns wide costs 15 x 4 x £26.95 = £1,617. Spot colour (a single colour plus black) is 15% extra. Full colour is an extra 30%.
This cost (£1,617) is the same whether you do all the work involved in the advert yourselves or if you use Giraffe to do all the work for you. If you use us, we book the advertisement and get a commission from the paper (in this case 10%) because we are an agency.
This agency commission, our main source of income, comes out of the amount you would pay (£1,617) anyway, if you did all the work yourselves.
In effect, this commission subsidises the work we do for you and means our services are virtually free.
Production Cost
This, the only additional cost of using our advertising services, is an all-inclusive fee for the time and materials used in creating/producing an actual advert, including copywriting and design. Please note that there is nothing to pay until we actually produce an advert that runs. The work leading up to a live advert (concepts etc.) is free.
Unfortunately, for competitive reasons which we hope you understand, we can’t disclose these charges, but call Kim on 020 7448 5128 and he’ll be happy to talk through our attractive rates with you.
The way we charge is different from some agencies in two ways:
- we charge a flat rate per advertisement, irrespective of the publication or size of the advertisement. Some agencies use a sliding scale system so that the charge varies with size but, our way, we all know where we are from the start.
- we charge the same for black and white and for colour adverts as there is no reason nowadays to charge more for the latter.
Additional copies of adverts (e.g. when the same advert runs in a second publication) or reruns of old adverts are charged at 50% of the original production cost.
We waive the production fee entirely for:
- registered charities
- start up companies (first three adverts)
- companies who have previously been placing adverts directly themselves (first three adverts).
Production volume discounts are available in some cases.
External charges
If we incur external fees – e.g. photography hire, delivery costs – on your behalf, these are passed on at cost plus a 17.5% mark up to cover administration. We will always quote these costs in advance and will never proceed without your approval.
Payment terms
We invoice on the date of insertion and have to insist on payment within 21 days of that date as we have to pay the media on your behalf – and, believe us, they are really strict!
